Today, I took the time to re-wax my old canvas rucksack, a project I had been meaning to tackle for a while. The rucksack has served me well over the years, but with the wear and tear of countless adventures, it was in need of some TLC.
I opted for Otter Wax, a highly recommended product known for its effectiveness in waterproofing canvas. The process is quite simple and rewarding.
Preparation: I started by cleaning the rucksack to remove any dirt or debris. A soft brush and some mild soap did the trick.
First Coat: Once the rucksack was clean and dry, I warmed the Otter Wax slightly by holding it near the woodstove. This made the wax more pliable and easier to apply. Using a clean cloth, I applied a thin layer of wax, making sure to cover all seams and areas that are prone to wear.
Setting the Wax: After the first coat, I let it sit for a bit before warming it again with the woodstove. This step is crucial as it helps the wax penetrate the fabric and bond properly. I waited until it was just warm to the touch, then moved on to the next coat.
Second Coat: I repeated the process for a second thin coat, ensuring even coverage. The warmth from the woodstove really helps in getting a nice, smooth finish.
Final Touch: After applying the second coat, I gave it one last warming session to ensure everything set perfectly.
The end result was stunning! The rucksack came up beautifully with a rich, protective sheen that not only enhances its appearance but also significantly improves its water resistance. This project not only revitalized my trusty companion but also served as a great excuse to slow down and engage in some hands-on maintenance.
I highly recommend taking the time to re-wax your canvas gear; it makes a world of difference in longevity and performance!
